Eye Colour: Amber, bordering on golden Starter Mutation: None Starter Gift: None so far as he's aware, but he does have an unawakened version of precognition (it's inactive in his body, but his son technically inherited it from him)
The Inside - - -
Positive Characteristics: Protective; loyal; determined; honest; eloquent; observant; creative Negative Characteristics: His protectiveness can become overbearing at times; mistrustful; cynical; blunt; abrasive; holds grudges Likes: Protected areas; seclusion; forests; silence; if he's in a foul mood, he may go looking for a fight Dislikes: Ironically, his greatest dislike is probably the Pure at the moment, despite the fact that he was once one; he still maintains many of his Pure views on the mutated and Dead, but he typically keeps those thoughts to himself; holier-than-thou attitudes; open spaces Goals: He'd like to start his own herd and gather like-minded individuals, but he has some lingering prejudices against those with mutations and gifts. Although he makes every effort to avoid insulting anyone unduly, he remains uncertain as to his success. Fears: His biggest fear is losing his son, whom he gave everything up for. It would be a huge blow to him to have sacrificed so much and have it be all for nothing.
The Past - - -
Family: His former mate, Melwyn, though he would not consider her family anymore, and his son. History: Born in the early days of the Pure faction, Sieghard was the perfect example of the Pure ideal: without mutations, without gifts, and utterly normal. As such, he was taught that he was the pinnacle of equine evolution, free of the grotesque effects of the Moorwater. As with all young children, he came to believe it rapidly and held true to his beliefs.
When he was young, he rarely noticed the difference between fillies and colts. As he aged, however, this began to change rapidly and there came a day when he noted that one of his childhood friends, Melwyn, had become beautiful as she grew out of the lankiness of foals. Acting on a whim, he awkwardly pursued her, frequently becoming the subject of light-hearted jokes and mocking among the older horses. It was never discouraged, however, for the Pure needed as many mating pairs as possible to bolster their ranks. In fact, some of the older horses even went so far as to offer "tips," though some of their pieces of advice seemed far too forward to Sieghard.
Against whatever odds set against him, Melwyn ignored his self-described "pathetic advances" and fell in love with him, too. Quite convinced that this would be his fairytale ending, Sieghard and Melwyn remained together for almost a year before Melwyn announced that she was pregnant. The entire herd celebrated, for this represented the possibility of yet another Pure soul to join them, and Sieghard was overjoyed at the prospect of having a playmate (for, though he technically qualified as an adult, a part of Sieghard had never grown up) and someone to pass on all his grand secrets to--of which he had admittedly few, but he valued them highly nonetheless.
His son was born early in the year, strong and healthy and everything Sieghard was hoping for (although Melwyn was constantly exasperated by Sieghard's constantly showing the foal off to his friends). For four months, Sieghard was perfectly content with his family. Nearing the end of the third month of his son's life, however, Melwyn returned to him one day looking serious. His concerned inquiries were met with one response: Come and see.
Following Melwyn, Sieghard came to a small copse in the forest where his son was playing. Melwyn called their son over, quietly ordering Sieghard to watch. The foal came a few steps closer, but stopped suddenly, turning frightened eyes onto Melwyn. Sieghard's concern was met with the shaking reply that mother was going to hurt him.
Sieghard was shocked, demanding how his son could know. Melwyn answered first, declaring that their son was an abomination and saying that he had cursed all three of them. Sieghard regarded her sidelong, warily, his gut sinking as he realized where this was going. He was soon proven correct by Melwyn's declaration that their son had to die to protect Sieghard and herself from the wrath of the other Pure. At his demand to know how she intended to murder her own child without anyone ever knowing, her solution was to leave the body behind--with any luck, scavengers would make it seem as though wolves or mountain lions caught him alone in the dead of night.
Sieghard turned to his son again, watching the tiny foal plead silently with his parents. Unable to bear the thought of killing his own child, Sieghard acted purely on instinct. As Melwyn was approaching the foal to kill him, Sieghard charged at her, his chest meeting her side and knocking her to the ground with his momentum. Turning to regard Melwyn warily, the mare rose and regarded him with disgust. Without looking at him, Sieghard told his son to flee, waiting until he had entered the forest before turning to follow. As he was fleeing, he felt two sharp pains in his flanks, but adrenaline and fear allowed him to ignore them during his flight. Catching up with his son, the two moved into the Common lands, where no one would think twice of two refugees.
